Truly terrible excuse for nudity and nymphomania

Reviewed by: Taku, Tue Feb 05 2008 (Modified: 2008-02-05 09:06:51)

This movie starts out instantly with, and basically continues to be nothing but, a sex scene. Being somewhat of a film aficionado, I can understand the need for movies to have a pull for their audiences towards the plot. Maybe some nudity here, or in dire circumstances some lesbianism or an orgy. Which is acceptable when it is used as a pull to some greater story line, some masterpiece that was far to cerebral to pull the numbers it needed. This movie, to be rather blunt is simply an excuse for nudity. And heavy sexual themes. Which actually makes the film sound more porny than it is. If it was straight porn, then it would be o.k. because then it would have a genre, or if it were a straight redemption movie, it would be acceptable because (hopefully) it would have strong cast and sturdy dialog. However, this movie lacks both. What this movie is is pseudo-erotica.

Though, I can acknowledge the difficulty in the task of making a sexual redemption movie with an attractive (sic) leading actress and not having sex a major part of it. But (hopefully) we don't want to see porn when we go to the cinema for a movie, we want to see an atmospheric masterpiece that makes us think or at least excites us with large explosions.

However, if you dig deep enough, you can find the small, stock and standard redemption themes, just done with gratuitous amounts of sex, sweaty people and Samuel L. Jackson. Which is not to say I don't like Jackson, he is generally a superb actor, and in fact he managed to do a good job, it was just the plot, soundtrack and cinematography were against him. And Christina Ricci, who probably hasn't had a clean role since the Casper movie.

The problem with reviewing this movie is that there is no plot to review, no masterpiece moments to commend, and nothing really special other than Ricci's assets, which gets boring after the first 10 minutes.
