Firefly is one of my all time favorite shows, and I curse Fox Networks every day for cancelling the show. Thankfully the season that was aired sold so well on DVD that Joss Whedon was allowed to make a movie based off the show.
The movie has a brief intro to tell the backstory of the show for those who didn't see the tv series before the main story of the movie begins. Joss Whedon is the master of writing witty and solid character dialogue as we've seen with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel and Serenity has a lot of good comedy, witty banter, but also good drama and action.
The story is good, and it wraps up the tv series as we get to learn what happened to River Tam and why she was being chased by the Alliance. This is high on my list of movies I'd recommend. People should really watch Firefly first, but it's not absolutely necessary.
